A Democratic mayor in Texas says she supports the Republican governor’s decision to transport illegal migrants to liberal refuges — and emphasized that those who were relocated were never lied to about their final destination.
Yolanda Ramon, pro-tem mayor of Eagle Pass, Texas, said migrants she has met who have crossed the US are often simply looking to get further away from the border and would appreciate the help to get there.
She said Fox news she agrees with the steps taken by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to move migrants to so-called refuges, including New York and Chicago, as well as the upscale and awakened Martha’s Vineyard.
She also said they often don’t know how far other cities are once they arrive in the country, which is why they are often willing to take offers of free transportation to northern cities.
‘I can tell you one thing, they are not lied to. When you meet them at the gas station, they say I just want to go somewhere. I just want to go further north,” Ramon said.

“Sometimes they don’t even know where they are,” she continued. “They’ll ask how far San Antonio is? How far is Houston? How far is New York?’
She told Fox News that illegal immigration is the most “urgent problem” in the town of Eagle Pass, which sits right on the US-Mexico border.
Ramon’s comments stand in stark contrast to those of many of her fellow Democrats, who have accused Abbott and DeSantis of human trafficking and extreme cruelty.
GOP lawmakers say they’d like to give liberal cities that support unchecked immigration a taste of what life is like along the southern border, where hundreds of thousands of people are caught crossing the street every month.
Ramon’s comments come as the US-Mexico border is under increasing pressure from an influx of immigrants, and many Republican politicians have begun busing illegal immigrants to Democratic refuges.
Ramon called the situation “comic,” adding that illegal immigrants no doubt “know where they’re going” when offered a ride to those cities.
“Of course they know where they’re going, or they wouldn’t go,” Ramon said.
She said immigrants probably think, “You know what, if I don’t have to walk 200 miles to San Antonio, and I can get on a bus and that bus will take me closer to where I want to go, let me get on that bus.” ‘
Democratic leadership has struggled with the immigrants showing up in their cities; New York City Mayor Eric Adams was recently forced to use a cruise ship as a processing center for immigrants.
Texas has brought more than 10,000 migrants to blue cities, and the Florida government Ron DeSantis and the Arizona government Doug Ducey have followed suit.
In a particularly brutal act, DeSantis flew about 50 Venezuelan migrants to the Democratic vacation hideout of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
About 15,500 migrants have made their way to New York according to City Hall estimates, with Adams predicting a wave of 75,000 that would strain the shelter system to “breaking point.”

Republicans have reprimanded the Biden administration for ignoring the prevailing crisis, especially as deaths along the border have reached record levels.
In September, preliminary figures show that 30 migrants have died along the border – adding to the total number of 782 deaths in 2022.
