Democrat files a restraining order against her ex over a slew of offensive messages and a wild claim about her sexual health

Retiring Congresswoman Katie Porter was granted a temporary restraining order against her ex-boyfriend after she accused him in court of abuse and harassment that she said made her fear for her safety and well-being.

The California Democrat filed a petition for a domestic violence restraining order in Orange Country Superior Court on Tuesday, court records show.

Porter claimed her romantic partner of several years sent her, her family and her staff more than a thousand text messages and emails over three months, according to the filing reviewed by Politico.

Judge Michael Perez granted the injunction Tuesday afternoon, ordering Willis to make no contact and stay away from the congresswoman and her children until another hearing in mid-December.

He also ordered Willis not to contact her current and former employees or her coworkers about her, but he denied requests for restraining orders against adults she does not live with, including her mother, according to the documents reviewed by Politico.

The filing included details of threats against Porter, 50, to call child protective services to remove her children from her custody.

It also details attempts to extort Porter for thousands of dollars and making “slanderous” false accusations, such as that she has genital herpes. She submitted test results to the court to prove she did not have the sexually transmitted disease, Politico said.

In her request, Porter said Willis, 55, deals with substance abuse and mental health issues, which have led to him being involuntarily committed twice since 2022.

According to Porter, he had taken steps to address the problems, such as attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings and staying in a sober living home, but she claimed to have witnessed his continued substance abuse.

She wrote that she had seen him’abuse of prescription painkillers, snorting Ritalin and abuse of cannabis and nicotine patches.’

“He has also previously disclosed to me his use of cocaine and nitrous oxide (‘whippets’),” she added.

Porter accused her ex Julian Willis of sending more than a thousand texts and emails to her, her family and her staff over a three-month period. Willis told Politico in an interview in response that the congressman had filed for a restraining order to stop him from doing so.

Politico conducted a telephone interview with Willis on Tuesday, in which he accused the congresswoman of seeking a restraining order to prevent him from suing her and seeking protection for herself and her children.

“She’s a monster,” he told Politico.

Willis provided copies of communications with University of California Irvine police alleging she was aggressive and violent toward him and the children in August and asked police to monitor his move.

A spokesperson for Porter’s office told Politico that the congressman was not in California the day he left and had no indication that police were present.

Willis said he has been sober for more than three years, but Politico noted that copies of text messages allegedly show him admitting substance abuse since 2022.

Porter is on his way out of Congress after failing to run for Senate.

She was first elected to Congress in the 2018 midterm elections and has represented first California’s 45th District and then the 47th District since 2023.

In Congress, she made a name for herself in House committee hearings, where she competed against witnesses and used a whiteboard as a prop.

As she moves to leave Congress, Porter has been active on the campaign trail in the final weeks of the 2024 campaign season, helping fellow Democrats, including the one running to represent California’s 47th Congressional District.
