Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar on Sunday demanded “repercussions” for illegal migrants amid a new wave of border crossings.

Border crossings in the 2023 fiscal year, which ends at the end of September, are on track to surpass those in 2022 after figures released on Friday showed an increase of 50,000 apprehensions in the month of August.

‘We must have repercussions at the border. What does that mean? You have to deport people, and you have to show images of people being deported,” Cuellar told Fox News on Sunday.

β€œWhen was the last time we saw people going the other way instead of just people pouring in?”

The moderate Democrat represents a region along the border that includes San Antonio. Neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump have a plan to solve the problem, according to Cuellar.

β€œI think Trump has gone too far to the right in separating families and children, and then I think President Biden, the administration, is not doing enough. We have to find the right balance,” he told host Bill Hemmer. β€œYou have to listen to community leaders.”

The congressman said the US must convince Mexico to act and secure its own borders to stop migrants before they reach the US border.

β€œI’ve been saying this for years,” Cuellar said, β€œwe as Democrats and Republicans can continue to play defense on the 1-yard line, or we can play defense on their 20-yard line – and that makes Mexico do that. more.’

More than 2.2 million people have been apprehended at the southern border this fiscal year, more than 230,000 of whom attempted to cross the border last month.

On Sunday night, Mexico struck a deal with the U.S. to deport migrants from its border cities to their home countries β€” and take other actions to prevent migrants from clinging to passing trains to reach the U.S.-Mexico border.

The new deal came after a meeting of Mexican officials with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials on Friday in Ciudad JuΓ‘rez, Mexico – across the border from El Paso, Texas – where the international bridge is now closed and Mexico’s main cargo system has been halted .

And recently, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that another 800 troops would be sent to the border to help with the crisis, joining the more than 2,500 National Guardsmen already in place.

Last week, Biden announced plans to quickly process more than 300,000 Venezuelan migrants who have crossed the border since July 31, to provide some relief from the growing numbers facing underfunded border officials.

Over the weekend, border crossings averaged 8,600 per day, up from 3,500, which was the average before the expiration of Title 42.
