Although the film was panned by critics, it still managed to make a decent profit, thanks to the appeal of Demi’s topless scenes.
In a famous scene, Demi rips off her bra while having a private dance with a congressman, played by Burt Reynolds.
Striptease director Andrew Bergman, who also co-wrote Blazing Saddles, later noted that his film with Demi was “better than almost anything I’ve been involved in. All the side hustles were huge.”
He told Entertainment Weekly with a laugh, “People were like, ‘I wouldn’t be caught dead with this,’ and all of a sudden, when it’s in a rental store, it’s, ‘I’ll buy Schindler’s List and Striptease.’ It’s like when you’re a kid and you buy condoms at the drugstore, but you also buy 12 tubes of toothpaste.”
However, the film was a critical failure and put a dent in Demi’s career, fueling criticism that she flaunted her body too much.
Funnyman Paul Kaye, aka Dennis Pennis, approached Demi on the red carpet the year Striptease came out and asked, “Unless it was gratuitous and tastefully done, would you under any circumstances keep your clothes on in a movie?”
Demi didn’t appreciate the joke and walked away.

Demi posed for the publication to promote her new, daring film The Substance, which follows a star who injects herself with an illegal drug to look younger.
The actress said she was “moved” when she read the film’s script.
Demi thought it was ‘a unique way to explore the issue of aging, of societal conditioning, and of what I also see as the pressure of the male-idealized woman that we as women go along with.’
She continued: “Essentially it’s about what we do to ourselves, and I loved that it was illustrated in such a physical way – it showed that violence in what we do with our minds, how we attack ourselves and twist things,” she said.
‘There is great power in knowing that what we do to ourselves is a choice, and that we can make a different choice.
“And for those who aren’t looking for such a deep message, it’s just entertaining.”
