Teen prodigy Delta Amidzovski has revealed what went through her mind as she shattered Sally Pearson’s 20-year record in the 100m hurdles to win gold at the Australian Junior Championships.

The 16-year-old rising star from New South Wales finished the race in 13.03 seconds on Sunday, 0.12 seconds off Olympic gold medalist Pearson’s goal in 2003.

“I didn’t believe it when I crossed the line. I looked at the time, I was really shocked. I didn’t think I would [break the record],” said the teen Channel 7 on Tuesday in her very first TV interview.

“I thought it was fast. I recorded some good times during practice, but I didn’t think it would go so fast.

“I mean, breaking her record is a pretty big feat, so I wasn’t expecting it.

“Looking back at it, I think it’s probably one of my fastest races.

“I’ve been working on getting over the hurdle a lot quicker with my drag leg as well, so on video it sure looks pretty fast.”

Amidzovski, who also won the national junior long jump title last weekend, hopes she will now be selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games in August.

She also dares to dream about participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“There’s a chance,” she said.

“There are some good hurdlers in the older age groups at the moment. I hope I succeed.

“If not, the 2032 Brisbane Olympics are the ones to watch out for.”

Australian sprinting legend Matt Shirvington said the youngster’s trajectory is very similar to Pearson’s.

‘When [Pearson] went ahead and set that record, she became World Youth Champion that same year,” said Shirvington.

“Less than five years later she was an Olympic medalist and an Olympic champion another four (years) later. That’s the kind of path she’s going on.”
