Deliveroo to cut around 350 jobs as cost-of-living crisis forces people to order less takeaway

Deliveroo will cut around 350 jobs amid a slowdown in the number of people ordering takeaway.

Founder Will Shu told staff it will cut 9% of the workforce as it became the latest technology company to cut jobs. It is clear that most of the cuts will affect British workers.

Demand for takeaway food boomed during the pandemic, but with life returning to normal, the ‘pandemic winners’ are struggling.

“The world we operate in has changed,” Shu said. ‘In recent years we have grown very quickly in our workforce.

“This was in response to unprecedented growth rates, supported by Covid-related tailwinds.

“On the other hand, we are now facing serious and unforeseen economic headwinds. Our fixed cost base is too large for our business.’

Deliveroo expects the number of workers laid off to be ‘closer to 300’.
