Decaying organs stored in jars lie among the remains of a morgue abandoned 13 years ago in France
The eerie remains of an abandoned morgue, including a rotten heart in a jar and empty refrigeration units, have been photographed by an explorer in France.
The former morgue, at an undisclosed location in France, had been a pathology school for medical students, but was left deserted after the institution closed in 2010.
Although some of the remains have crumbled since its closure 13 years ago, some of the decaying material had evidently been stolen.
A grim image showed a human heart left to rot in a jar, improperly stored and abandoned when the building was abandoned.
“I will never forget the smell of the human heart,” said photographer and explorer Chloe Urbex, who ventured into the uninhabited building.

An abandoned body cart and empty refrigeration units were left in the building. The morgue and pathology school were closed in 2013 due to funding cuts.
The site had previously acted as a mortuary and pathology school to teach medical students about disease and illness. The building was permanently closed due to public funding cuts.
Despite being abandoned for so long, a generator in the autopsy rooms was still plugged in and running, causing loud noise throughout the building.
There were also intact refrigerator cabinets and discarded medical equipment.
Organs like hearts were left in jars. But after being carelessly stored without lids, they corroded and discolored.
A heart, left in an upside-down bucket, had begun to mold and attract worms. There was evidence that many more organs were stored in the morgue, but it appeared that they had been stolen.
Until recently, the building had on-site security personnel who lived on the premises, but they have since left after now-aborted construction work began on the site.

“Investigating abandoned places, I came across a morgue located in France, which supposedly had shaken human organs, a brain and bones,” he said.

Tables and medical equipment remained inside the building. A generator in the autopsy rooms was still plugged in and running, causing a loud noise throughout the building.
At the bottom of the stairs was a stretcher that would have been used to transport the deceased. Until recently, the building had on-site security personnel who lived on the premises, but they have since left after now-aborted construction work began on the site.
“The human bones, the brain and some of the dislocated human organs are missing,” he added.
“Mortuary scans have been my favorite for a long time, yet never before have I stepped foot in an abandoned building with human organs left so carelessly.
‘The hearts were left in open glass jars in the basement.
“Upstairs where the autopsy rooms are the noisy generators are still plugged in and running, strangely they were quite loud and scared us a bit.
“I was relieved to receive the photos because it’s an exploration I’ve wanted to see for quite some time, but I’ll never forget the smell of the human heart.”
