The beloved 2019 video game Death Stranding is heading to the big screen with a new adaptation.

Iconic Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima and his banner Kojima Productions are teaming up with Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios to produce the film, via Variety.

It will be the first film adaptation of a video game to come out of Kojima Productions, and is said to introduce new characters to this world as well.

Creator: Iconic Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima and his banner Kojima Productions are teaming up with Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios to produce the film, via Variety.

Death Stranding is set in the United States, after a mysterious cataclysmic event that led to massive creatures roaming what was left of Earth after society collapsed.

Players control a character named Sam Bridges (played in-game by Norman Reedus), who is tasked with delivering supplies to a series of isolated communities and trying to reconnect them via a wireless communications network.

The game also features the likeness and voices of other established actors, with Mads Mikkelsen (Clifford Unger), Lea Seydoux (Fragile), Margaret Qualley (Mama) and director Guillermo del Toro (Deadman).

Aftermath: Death Stranding is set in the United States, after a mysterious cataclysmic event led to massive creatures roaming what was left of Earth after society collapsed.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” Kojima said in a statement.

“This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I am looking forward to collaborating with them to bring Death Stranding to the big screen,” he added.

The game has sold more than five million copies worldwide and won Best Game Direction, Music/Score and Performance for Mikkelsen at the 2019 Game Awards, out of a total of nine nominations.

Excited: “I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” Kojima said in a statement.

“We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with the brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima in his first feature film adaptation,” said Lebovici, who most recently served as an executive producer on the horror hit Barbarian.

“Unlike other big-budget video game adaptations, this will be something much more intimate and grounded,” he added.

“Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be a true production of ‘Hideo Kojima’”, concluded Lebovici.

It’s unclear at this time if Reedus, Mikkelsen, Seydoux, Qualley, or del Toro will be involved in the film adaptation.

The news comes just a week after Kojima announced at the 2022 Game Awards that he is developing a sequel to his iconic game.
