Death of veteran actor, 81, who starred in The Bill is announced as inquest is held after he died following surgery

Actor Tony Mathews died after surgery in 2023, it has been confirmed.

The veteran actor was best known for roles in The Bill, Inspector Morse and Poirot, among others.

Tony, from Canterbury, Kent, also starred in Ridley Scott’s 1977 war film The Duellists, his first film role, and played Royston Andrews in The Governor.

It was confirmed today that an inquest into his death will take place in Kent following his death at the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital in December 2023.

The veteran TV star first appeared on The Duellists in 1977, playing the role of General Treillard’s Aide-de-Camp.

He also played Lord Lucan in Escape and starred in Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years as Anthony Eden.

He played Lord Lucan in the TV show Escape in 1980

He took on the role of Gerald Lowen in Poirot in 1990, working alongside David Suchet as the titular detective.

He then appeared in two episodes of The Bill in the early 1990s, playing Cosgrove and Farquharson.

He followed this with a role as a pathologist in Inspector Morse in 1992.
