D&D’s new vinyl album, Bardic Inspiration, is made for adventure

Two years ago, Wizards of the Coast dipped its toe into the waters of modern music production with the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired album Spelljamsa free streaming album backed by a collectible vinyl pressing. Now it’s back with a second double vinyl offering, just in time for the holidays. But instead of an eclectic neo-synthwave riot put together by The Decembrist’s Chris Funk, this next album is much more relaxed and cerebral. It’s called Bardic inspiration: a musical journey through the forgotten realmsand will be available in stores and online retailers from November 15.

The 180 gram gatefold vinyl looks impressive, with glossy embossed accents on the front and a lithe gold dragon on the inside. Honestly, it would be a half-decent Dungeon Master screen if it was just one panel longer. But the real treasure isn’t necessarily the cardboard, or the vinyl itself. It is the music, which sounds both rich and cheerful.

The album, composed by Michael Gatt, feels like the soundtrack to an epic movie that was never made. It starts with the thunderous and expansive ‘Across the Forgotten Realms’ and then moves into ringing, mystical songs like ‘In Praise of Lolth’ and ‘Lords and Lairs of Waterdeep’. Later there are also thematic choral elements, such as the dragon’s breathing in “Arise, Tiamat!” and the charmingly rustic “Fare Thee Well,” sung “live from the Yawning Portal,” according to the liner notes. Overall, the score, recorded asynchronously between the United States, Austria and the United Kingdom, is as coherent as it is complete.

But while Bardic inspiration lacks the comedy and character that made it Spelljams such a surprising delight, this album fulfills a completely different role. It’s clearly intended to inspire DMs as they plan their next adventure, or to be played in the background of your gaming group’s decisive final battle. It is an orchestral accompaniment for every adventurer, regardless of how much time he or she has already spent at the table. Pick it up Apple music or via Amazon Musicor put on the physical album Amazon or at Barnes & Edel.
