DC United have announced the signing of Mateusz Klich from Leeds United for two years, with an option until 2025.
The midfielder joined the club in 2017 and helped Leeds gain promotion to the Premier League in 2020.
Klich played an important role in Leeds’ first two seasons in the top flight, but had not started this year for Jesse Marsch’s side.
Klich first joined Leeds in 2017 and featured in six seasons for the Yorkshire club.
He should certainly find more playing time in MLS as DC United manager Wayne Rooney has revealed that he has been keeping an eye on him for three years.
“Mateusz is a top-tier midfielder who will add high-level experience to our roster,” Rooney said in a team statement.
“I’ve been watching him since he helped lead Leeds to promotion to the Premier League and his vision, passing variety and scoring ability will be a huge asset for us this season.”
Marsch and the rest of the Leeds squad paid tribute to Klich on 4 January after the team’s 2–2 draw with West Ham, wearing shirts with him after it was announced he was leaving the club.
Klich’s teammates at Leeds paid tribute to him after the team drew 2-2 with West Ham last week.
And manager Jesse Marsch got in on the act, too, wearing a Klich T-shirt puffing on a cigar.
In 195 games in all competitions for Leeds, Klich scored 24 goals and recorded 21 assists.
That includes a season of four goals and five assists in the club’s return to the Premier League in 2020-21.
“This offseason was important for us to look at our roster and see where we can make improvements after a disappointing 2022 season,” DC United president of soccer operations Dave Kasper said.
Klich found it difficult to break into the starting line-up this season before leaving the club.
‘Bringing in a top-class designated player was high on our priority list and Mateusz has played at the highest level for both club and country. He will add a lot of midfield experience and he will be an impact player for us this season and beyond. We are excited to welcome you to the Nation’s Capital.’
DC United hopes Klich will improve on a team that finished last in the Eastern Conference last season with 27 points.
Former Premier League player Christian Benteke also joined the team last year.
