Polarizing batsman David Warner is set to become Australia’s next one-day captain – despite his pivotal role in South Africa’s infamous 2018 sandpaper scandal.
Warner, 35, could replace retiring Aaron Finch, and the man they’re calling “Bull” has been endorsed by all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.
“He (Warner) is a great leader of our group,” Marsh said.
“As far as all decisions are concerned, I will definitely stay away from all those conversations. But he’s a great man to have on the team.”
Marsh herself was considered for the role, but ruled herself out.
“Probably not to be honest, I’m out of the race,” he told AAP. “The World Cup (T20) is such an exciting prospect for all of us, to worry about stuff like that (one day captaincy) is just not on my radar right now.”

Team-mate Mitchell Marsh has approved Warner as Aaron Finch’s potential replacement as Australia’s next ODI skipper
If Warner takes over, the veteran will need Cricket Australia to undo his lifelong leadership ban, largely as a result of the 2018 South Africa ball tampering scandal.
In shocking scenes that led to Warner, then-captain Steve Smith and batsman Cameron Bancroft all being banned from nine to 12 months for discrediting the sport, Warner was seen as the main instigator on the pitch in Newlands.
Bancroft was caught red-handed on TV cameras with yellow sandpaper in his pocket to alter the movement of the ball.
The images went viral, with Warner also vice-captain at the time.
Finch also believes that Warner’s lifetime ban on CA should be lifted.

“He (Warner) is someone I played with for Australia a few times when he had the chance to become captain,” he told Triple M.
“He’s been fantastic. He is an incredible tactical captain and someone at the time that the boys loved to play under.
“Would I like to see (his ban) reversed? Yes absolutely.
“What he can offer, not only now as a player, but also for the future to be able to coach the next generation of players and help them get through is so important.
“You do your time, and he did it well.”
Other candidates include Test Skipper Pat Cummins and Wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
