David Moyes praises star winger Jarrod Bowen for his reaction to foul chants chanted towards him during West Ham’s win at Kenilworth Road against Luton

  • Jarrod Bowen scored in West Ham’s 2–1 win at Kenilworth Road against Luton
  • Luton fans directed swear words at Bowen, who silenced the home fans in response
  • Bowen has now scored three goals in three appearances to start the season

David Moyes praised Jarrod Bowen for picking the perfect way to silence Luton’s fans after their filthy chants about his girlfriend Dani Dyer during West Ham’s victory put them at the top of the table.

The 26-year-old winger, who has a twin daughter with the former Love Island star, was subjected to songs of ‘Jarrod Bowen, your girlfriend’s aw****’ on Kenilworth Road. Bowen scored West Ham’s opening goal and celebrated by silencing the home supporters with his finger.

Moyes said after their win, “What are you doing? You go and you score and you know this answers the questions. Players get criticized, managers too, and people get away with it.’

Bowen, overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate in his latest squad, has now scored in all three of West Ham’s away games in the Premier League this season. Moyes added: “Jarrod took his goal well. He was always a threat. He started the season in good goalscoring form.’

During Luton’s first home game in the Premier League, their fans also turned to Kurt Zouma because of the footage that surfaced in 2022 of him kicking and punching his cat. The 28-year-old defender, who now wears the West Ham captain’s armband, scored their second goal. Like Bowen, he chose to celebrate towards home support.

“I don’t know if it set them on fire, but I do know it was a great ball from James Ward-Prowse and a brilliant header, a great jump,” said Moyes. “It cost them the game. We were the better team. We should have been further ahead.’

Luton felt they deserved a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time after a handball from Ward-Prowse. Referee Paul Tierney gave nothing and VAR John Brooks did not intervene.

Manager Rob Edwards insists that, despite three consecutive defeats, they believe they will soon be doing some damage of their own. “We just talked about it in the locker room,” Edwards said. West Ham are a very good team but I saw nothing to be afraid of and the players feel the same way. We need to make sure we are more ruthless when we get those opportunities. I want to give these great supporters some points to cheer for.’
