David Moyes hits out over criticism of his team selection and fumes over West Ham defending after crashing out of the Carabao Cup at Liverpool

David Moyes defended selecting a weakened team and launched into a frustrated tirade after West Ham's 5-1 defeat to Liverpool.

Like opponent Jurgen Klopp, Moyes made six changes to his team and did not give Liverpool any gloves.

It prompted supporters to criticize his tactics, with some booing at half-time in the away match and many leaving before the final whistle.

But the Hammers boss defended his choices.

Asked whether his selection had opened him up to criticism, Moyes replied: 'It's a pretty cheap question to ask.

'We have had the fastest turnaround of any team in the Premier League. The only teams to have played more in recent years are Liverpool and Manchester City.

'I don't change that often. Tonight it was about how good Liverpool were. If you're going to talk about rotation, talk about the number of games we've played.

'I've been here many times, been beaten many times, but tonight I thought, “My goodness, how many more are they going to get?”

'We have won seven of the last nine. Don't forget how well we did. What do you expect from West Ham? Would you expect us to win a European trophy? Challenge for the Champions League? We've done well for what we are. We will keep trying to win the games, challenge the top teams, and we will try to win cups if we get the chance. “Tonight was a tough game for us.”

Klopp asked Liverpool fans to improve the atmosphere as Anfield has felt flat of late.

“I wasn't too happy with the atmosphere behind me,” said the Reds manager. 'I was like, “What do you want?”

'We changed the team a lot and dominated West Ham. If I had been in the crowd, I would have stood on my toes.

'On Saturday (against Arsenal) we have to keep Anfield on its toes from the first second.

'We need you. If it's too much football in December, sorry.'
