David Moyes heaps praise on Said Benrahma after scoring winner against his former club Brentford

David Moyes hopes Said Benrahma’s sensational goal against his former club Brentford is the magical moment West Ham needed to get their season back on track.

Substitute Benrahma’s second-half winning goal from 25 yards gave the Hammers victory over the team that beat them 2-0 in the Premier League last week.

It was West Ham’s first win in any competition since 3 November and with a trip to Wolves next in the league, Moyes said: “We have something to build on.” Hopefully we can get back on track.

‘This was a tough draw and we had them last week in the league. We are delighted to have finished. I said last week in the press conference: “We could use someone to score a shout.”

He said he definitely did. Said has done this in different games: he’s come off the bench and he’s been an impact. We saw in the World Cup how much difference the substitutes made. Fortunately Said did it for us. He could easily have started it. But he came in and scored a tremendous goal.

Benrahma’s goal began with an excellent tackle from Declan Rice in midfield to pinch possession and Moyes reserved particular praise for his captain, who played another full 90.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank refused to become the latest manager to complain about the referees, despite some home fans feeling Rice’s tackle was a foul on Yoane Wissa.

“I think I support Andre (Marriner, the referee) and the VAR room to get it right,” Frank said. ‘No complains. I don’t think it was a clear fault. We have four, five players behind the ball and shooting from 25 meters… It was a good shot from Said.’

In better news for Brentford, Ivan Toney is set to return to full training after this weekend.
