David Harbour reveals heartwarming first impression of wife Lily Allen’s daughters after previously saying he didn’t want to have children

David Harbour has revealed he instantly fell in love with Lily Allen’s two children when they first met, even though he never wanted children.

The 49-year-old Stranger Things star was introduced to Ethel and Marnie over breakfast at The Wolseley in London’s Mayfair and admitted he was “terrified” about the meeting.

However, the actor admitted he was impressed by the “innocent” faces and immediately felt the need to care for the seven and six-year-old girls.

Lily is responsible for raising her two daughters alongside her father and ex-husband, contractor Sam Cooper. She divorced him in 2015 after he admitted to being unfaithful.

David and Lily met in 2019 and got engaged the following year, before marrying in an intimate ceremony in Las Vegas.

During an appearance on the Miss Me? podcast, hosted by Lily and Miquita Oliver, David also opened up about why he felt she was the one and married her.

Asked how he felt about playing the stepfather, David said: “I love it. It’s honestly the most surprising and fun thing I’ve ever done. I never wanted kids.

“Like I’ve been through the wringer in a lot of ways in my life, and genetically as well, I’m the last boy in my family, so the Harbour name will die with me. I kind of like that. I have a real fetish for ‘let’s end this bloodline, let’s end the genealogy.’

‘And I’ve also led a kind of artistic, in my mind childish life, running around, doing things and following my impulses a lot. That doesn’t really suit children.

‘And I think I was very much against children. And then I met Lily and we dated for a while, and I remember there was one day where she said, ‘I want you to meet the kids.’ And I was ready for it, we were at that stage where we were in love and all that stuff.

‘I met the children, we went to Wolseley. She took the children and I remember her saying to the children, ‘This man could become a big part of our lives.’

‘And I think Marnie said later that she thought I was going to be her new assistant. And I kind of am.

‘But I do remember meeting the children and having breakfast with them, and I was scared.

‘And then I almost immediately fall in love with them – in love with them – and I feel that thing that people talk about when they have kids, like, ‘Wow, I want to take care of you, more than just myself, and I would do anything for you, give you anything. ‘

‘I immediately felt a kind of love for them, that was so unique.

‘Those innocent faces looked at you, so confused. They were about six and seven at the time.

‘And that really pushed me over the edge. I thought, ‘Wow, this is so rare – that this is a family, a kind of pre-programmed family.’

“I don’t have to have the kids myself, I don’t have to have them carry my name. I can just help these people grow up and give them Starbucks and Taylor Swift merchandise.”

When asked what made them get married, he replied, “It came out of nowhere.

‘I think it was because I was in love with her, but as we had a few conversations I realised that she saw me in a completely different way than anyone else.

‘And she really wanted me to be who I wanted to be. And I think that’s very rare in a relationship.

“I think people get into relationships and there’s a lot of control or sacrifice. I think it’s rare that someone says, ‘I see these things in you and I understand that they’re important to you and I want you to do that.’

‘There’s something about love that can be very possessive, and I don’t think that’s the case with her. It’s very genuine.

“I thought, ‘Woah, I gotta keep that.’ Put a ring on it.”#
