David Geffen’s former Malibu mansion he sold for a whopping $85 million to Los Angeles Dodgers owner burns to the ground in Palisades fire

The former Malibu mansion of music mogul David Geffen is one of many beachfront homes decimated by the Palisades fire.

The 81-year-old music mogul sold his iconic home – which is located on an estate previously owned by Doris Day – for a whopping $85 million in 2017.

He received permits to build the house in 1983 on the condition that he build a public path to the beach, although he failed to do so and filed a lawsuit in 2002 to completely block public access.

After a three-year legal battle, he admitted in 2005 to building a public path that was dubbed “Malibu’s most famous beach battle.”

He eventually sold the home in 2017, which was a record price for Malibu real estate at the time.

Although the buyer was not immediately identified, it was later revealed to be Mark Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners, owner of the MLB team Los Angeles Dodgers (via LA curbed).

Now the building is charred and destroyed, with the facade of the garage decimated by the flames.

Although many of the walls appear to be still standing, they have been blackened by the flames while many parts of the house are still on fire.

It is currently unclear how extensive the damage actually is, although the home was clearly not spared by the Palisades Fire.

The Palisades Fire is covering as much as 15,000 acres and has led to mass evacuations across the area.

The fire spread through wind gusts of more than 99 miles per hour, devastating Malibu, the Pacific Palisades and more.

It is one of several fires currently burning in Southern California, including the Eaton Fire which has burned more than 10,000 acres, the Hurst Fire (700 acres), Lidia Fire (80 acres) and Woodley Fire (30 acres).

The house is located on Carbon Beach, also known as Billionaire’s Beach, where celebrities such as Janet Jackson, Courteney Cox and Leonardo DiCaprio have lived, to name a few.

Geffen first purchased the property in the mid-1970s, originally consisting of five lots that he combined into two lots on which he built the house.

Even though he agreed to give the public access to the beach on his property – to give in to a 1976 California law, the California Coastal Act.

That law stipulates that any member of the public has access to any beach in the state, which he ultimately conceded.

He was even accused of building fake garage doors where his land met the Pacific Coast Highway.
