Manchester United’s David de Gea will not attend the World Cup in Qatar later this year after reportedly not being on Spain’s 55-man preliminary squad.
Spanish boss Luis Enrique has submitted his tentative list of players eligible to play at the tournament, from which his final 26-man roster will be chosen.
Despite the size of the team, there is still no place for United’s de Gea, who has been overlooked by three other Premier League goalkeepers.
Man United goalkeeper David de Gea expected to be dropped from Spain’s World Cup squad
National coach Luis Enrique has nominated a selection of 55 men, including five goalkeepers
According to AS,,Enrique has selected five different goalkeepers in the list of 55 men, but De Gea is not one of them.
The three goalkeepers who will fly to Qatar are Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simón, Brighton’s Robert Sánchez and Brentford’s David Raya.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga and Getafe’s David Soria have been chosen as backups in the event of injury or illness ahead of the tournament.
The inclusion of the first in the roster may come as a surprise, as he has played half as many Premier League games as De Gea this season.
The only other well-known players on Spain’s list are fullbacks Alejandro Balde, Jordi Alba and Jose Gaya.
Brentford’s David Raya (L) and Chelsea’s Kepa (R) are both part of the preliminary squad
Robert Sanchez from Brighton has also been selected for his impressive performance
De Gea’s omission may come as a surprise to some – given his long history as a national team player – but his exclusion has been several years in the making.
He has not been on a Spain national team since their 1-0 World Cup qualifier win over Sweden in November last year, where he was an unused substitute.
And you’d have to go back two years to find De Gea’s last start for Spain. He played the full 90 minutes when Enrique’s side lost 1-0 to Ukraine in a Nations League match in 2020.
The 31-year-old came under criticism after the game with many suggesting that it was his positioning that enabled Viktor Tsygankov to score the winner on the night.

The national team may not be De Gea’s only concern for the foreseeable future with rumors that Erik ten Hag is looking for a replacement for the Spaniard.
The United shotstopper is out of contract this summer and now there are questions about whether or not to extend his contract.
The club is associated with the man who replaced De Gea in the national team – Simon of Bilbao – and Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
It is a bizarre situation considering that De Gea has played in all 15 games for United since Ten Hag took over this summer.
Unai Simon could potentially replace David de Gea at both club and country level
