A source told the publication: ‘The bosses at Disney were thrilled to sign David to Save Our Squad. They felt it was a real coup.

‘Although the documentary was only made for one series, they hoped to continue it and film more as new children came along.

‘They wanted to repeat the success of Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams for the BBC. But unfortunately they didn’t get the viewing figures, so they decided to stop after one series.’

Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams aired the same year and followed a very similar premise, with the cricket star going to his hometown of Preston to create his own team.

In an effort to prove that the sport wasn’t just for the posh, he formed a team of youngsters to compete against both a private school and veterans.

The show captured the hearts of audiences as it explored the stories of the reluctant teens, attracting more than 3.3 million viewers in its first 30 days.

Unlike David’s show, Field of Dreams was commissioned for a second series but was paused after 46-year-old Freddie was injured in a horrific car crash during the filming of Top Gear in December 2022.

The former international cricketer was airlifted to hospital after flipping an open-topped three-wheel Morgan Super 3 at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey and is recovering from serious injuries sustained in the crash.

The second episode was also a success, reaching 2,868,800 viewers in the week ending October 8.

The series, titled Beckham, followed Posh and Becks in their personal and professional lives, exploring their history along with interviews with the couple.
