Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes has revealed that he once refused to be on The Project because the show didn’t have a live audience.
The 51-year-old made the startling admission during his 2Day FM’s Hughsey, Ed and Erin breakfast show on Friday.
The incident took place during the first season of The Project in 2009, when Hughes was an original and regular panelist.

Hughes told listeners that he brought up the issue of a live audience in pre-show meetings and that producers agreed to have one.
But Hughes was crushed when he came to the studio to find there was no audience at all, so he refused to go ahead with the recording.
“They lied,” he explained.
‘I refused to go further until they arrived [an audience.] He said producers ended up taking people off the streets.

“They’ve had a live audience ever since.”
Hughes’ breakfast show co-host Erin Molan said she was surprised The Project ever had a live audience.
Hughes had interrupted Molan’s tribute to outgoing A Current Affair anchor Tracy Grimshaw to share his “diva” moment.
Molan sounded unimpressed with Hughes and apologized to Grimshaw on air.
‘Sorry Trace, this [segment] was hijacked,” she said.
