Dave Fishwick is cagey as he breaks silence on reportedly signing up to Strictly Come Dancing, admitting ‘I can’t possibly comment, I would be in real trouble’

Dave Fishwick has broken his silence after it was reported he had signed up for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Bank Of Dave’s inspiration, 53, was rumored to have ‘signed on the dotted line’ for the 2024 competition in May.

But appearing on BBC Breakfast on Sunday, the community banker was coy when asked about his reported performance.

“No, I can’t,” he said when host Roger Johnson asked him if he could dance.

‘Strict? There are rumors. There’s been a lot of talk about it,” Roger said, before Dave smiled and replied: “I can’t possibly comment, I’d really get into trouble.”

“No, I can’t comment on that at all,” he added.

This is where you suddenly become the politician,” Roger said, before Dave replied: “Listen no, that would get me into so much trouble, really.

“There are rumors, there are definitely rumors. Big ones, yes. I can’t possibly comment.’

In what he reportedly described as making his ‘dreams’ come true, Dave recently ‘signed the dotted line to confirm his place after being approached by BBC bosses earlier this year’.

Dave, who left school at 16 without any qualifications, has lent more than £27 million to people and businesses since setting up a community bank.

According to The sunsaid a source: ‘Dave is a true community hero and the best of the British.

‘I strictly think his inspiring backstory will win him new fans and shine a spotlight on the great work he has done for people and causes in Lancashire.

‘Dave has told his friends that he has accepted it and that he can’t wait to get started. For Dave it is a dream come true. He is a working-class man who has done well for himself and decided to use his success to help others.”

His bank Burnley Savings and Loans, which is still going strong today, operated on a not-for-profit basis and all surplus money went to charities.

From his desk at his small head office in central Burnley, Dave has lent thousands of locals to cover everything from funeral costs to IVF.

The down-to-earth businessman’s extraordinary life was recently captured in the recent biopic called Bank of Dave, which hit number one on Netflix.

James Bond star Rory Kinnear played him in the feel-good film which also featured Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor.

It’s a compelling feel-good story that caught the attention of Hollywood screenwriters, who turned Dave’s battle with the banking giants into a big-budget biopic.

Speaking earlier to Ny Breaking, he said: ‘People who rob banks go to jail, but banks that rob people get bonuses and get bailed out.

“The truth is that we have been poorly served by the banks in the past and we need change. Banks that are too big to fail are simply too big to exist.’

‘I’d like to go home. I like my own bed and being close to family,” he says.

‘If I’ve had a really hard day – and I’ve had plenty of hard days – I’ll open my front door, I’ll smell apple pie, and my wife, Nicola, will have made me take a bath with a bottle of beer there. What could be more fun? Burnley is where I come from, where my friends don’t care who I am, and rightly so.’
