Dave Chappelle performed ‘FAKE’ SNL monologue in rehearsal before unveiling new version on air

Dave Chappelle kept NBC and the producers of Saturday Night Live guessing until the last moment when he reportedly performed a new version of his monologue for the live broadcast.

The 49-year-old comedian performed a “fake” version of his monologue for the dress rehearsal earlier on Saturday night, before doing another monologue that was not approved by anyone for the show to air on television, sources said. Chappelle’s short stand-up set that appeared during the live broadcast was criticized for normalizing antisemitism, although it is not clear whether any of the most controversial segments were included in the earlier performance.

“Dave gives a fake monologue during dress rehearsal because he doesn’t want to [SNL creator] Lorne Michaels, or anyone else, to know what his real monologue is,” a source claimed to the publication.

They added that Chappelle included a joke referencing a writer at SNL announcing they would be boycotting the episode due to his participation.

The publication previously reported that multiple writers declined to work with Chappelle due to his history of making jokes that have been labeled transphobic in recent years.

A representative for the Half Baked star previously claimed he was unaware of a writer’s boycott against him.

However, he seems to have known about the boycott by the time he joked about it during dress rehearsal.

An insider claimed his joke about one of the writers “inflamed tensions” on set, even though it didn’t make it to the nationally aired version of the show.

The final version of his monologue was destroyed by the Anti-Defamation League for “popularizing” anti-Semitism.

In a joke, Chappelle explained Kanye West’s recent anti-Semitic statements while seemingly offering him a public relations roadmap to sidestep past criticism.

“I wanted to read a statement I had prepared: I condemn anti-Semitism in all its forms and stand with my friends in the Jewish community,” the comedian began.

“And that, Kanye, is how you buy yourself some time,” he added to complete the joke.

Chappelle, whose monologue lasted about 15 minutes, was not content to stop there, and several other jokes centered around anti-Semitism or Jews.

He referenced the suspension of Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets after promoting an anti-Semitic conspiracy-theory amateur movie on Amazon Prime, and also joked about the premise that Jews control the entertainment industry.

Chappelle previously hosted SNL in 2020.

The polarizing artist joked in his trademark way that he’d never heard a good thing from anyone who’d used the phrase “the Jews”—referring to West, of course, as well as Irving.

Chappelle offered some sarcastic guidance to the couple, saying, “I’ve learned that there are two words in the English language that you should never say back to back. And those words are ‘the’ and ‘Jews’.’

Then the comic went on to break the stereotypes surrounding the Jewish people – especially in Hollywood – pushing the boundaries of prime TV.

Controversy: He was criticized for jokes that “popularized” antisemitism, though it’s unclear if any of that material was in the first monologue; still from SNL with Kenan Thompson, Punkie Johnson and Ego Nwodim

In the monologue, Chappelle — who in 2005 famously left the Los Angeles spotlight for a more humble life in Africa for the better part of a decade — said he had been to Hollywood and, based on his own travels, “It is a lot of Jews. Like, a lot.”

The comic then quickly added, “But that doesn’t say anything. There are a lot of black people in Ferguson, Missouri.

“That doesn’t mean they’re running the place,” he said, referring to West’s recent statement.

He joked about how West may have mistakenly thought he was untouchable before making the series of comments, until he was dropped by several companies, including Adidas and Balenciaga.

“Adidas dropped that n**** right away!” he joked about the rapper losing the partnerships, though he seemed to have misunderstood the timing, as Adidas waited several weeks after West began posting anti-Semitic statements to drop him.

But as his monologue became increasingly controversial — with the comic acknowledging the influence many Jewish professionals have on a place like Hollywood — some gasps and groans from the audience became audible.

“I just feel like if you go to Hollywood, you kind of connect the lines and come under the impression that the Jews are running Hollywood,” Chappelle said. “It’s not crazy to think.”

The comic would then quickly add, “But it’s crazy to say out loud at a time like this.”
