Daryl Hannah says she was ‘incredibly anxious’ about the prospect of appearing nude in the 1984 film Splash: ‘I was very sheltered at the time’

Daryl Hannah revealed she was ‘incredibly concerned’ about appearing nude in the 1984 fantasy comedy Splash during a new interview with People.

The 63-year-old actress starred opposite Tom Hanks in the Ron Howard-directed film, which followed a young man who falls in love with a woman who turns out to be a mermaid.

Hannah – who shared her support for another actress playing a mermaid in 2022 – has since revealed she was “really naive” while working on the film, which was shot in her early 20s.

She also told the media that she was apprehensive about the prospect of appearing naked while working on Splash.

‘I have traveled a lot around the world, but at the same time I have been very sheltered. I hadn’t really had a boyfriend yet… so I was incredibly concerned about nudity,” she recalls.

The Kill Bill vol. One actress further stated that Howard’s team devised a method to show much of her skin while keeping her breasts hidden.

She recalled that they “made up my hair covering my breasts because they didn’t want me to wear some kind of, I don’t know, shell bathing suit or something — which I understood.”

Hannah also discussed a scene where she kissed Hanks, and she recalled choosing to skip any physical contact during rehearsals.

‘Once you’ve done it once, it’ll be easier to get through it the next time. But that first time, when you don’t know someone and you have to kiss them, is so embarrassing. At least for me it was,” she said.

Hannah humorously added that her experience shooting the film was “so embarrassing.”

Hannah concluded her interview by saying that although she had largely stepped away from her acting career, she wouldn’t be averse to appearing in the right project.

“I suppose if something really cool happened that I thought would transform me in that way, maybe I would do it,” she said.

In addition to the actress and her costar, the film starred artists such as Eugene Levy, Dody Goodman and John Candy.
