Darren Hayes got emotional on The Masked Singer Australia on Tuesday as he discussed the challenges he has experienced as a gay singer.
The Savage Garden star, 51, was unmasked as the Grim Reaper during the nail-biting finale and tearfully discussed his sexuality with panellist Abbie Chatfield, 28.
Hayes became emotional after Chatfield told him she loved his music and the work he had done to support the LGBTQ+ community.
‘Don’t make me cry. I got signed to a record company that hated that I was gay. It was a desperate plea to be loved,” Darren said as he burst into tears.
‘I used to hate myself for being gay. The reason I cried when you told your story was because I desperately needed someone to say those words.”

“I performed twice at Mardi Gras. Actually, the first time I performed at Mardi Gras, I hated who I was,” he added.
Darren went on to say that every time Abbie cried at his performances, it made him cry in the mask.
“I cried the first time you cried. I was in that mask in episode one and I started crying. And every time you cried, I had to try to sing.
“And it’s really hard to sing and cry,” he said, laughing.

Elsewhere in the episode, Snow Fox won the final season of the singing competition.
The celebrity in the costume was unmasked as none other than X Factor and Eurovision star Dami Im.
Chrissie Swan guessed correctly, based on Dami’s walk, and decided it looked like a woman who had recently had a baby, which Dami also had.
Dami said it was an honor to be on the show with Mel B as she was a big Spice Girls fan growing up.

‘I came to Australia when I was nine years old, didn’t speak a word of English, but I learned to talk by listening to the Spice Girls songs.
“And that also taught me really bad grammar,” she joked.
Dami added that she had plenty of time to prepare for the show while tucked away from the audience with her baby.
In third place was Healing Hands hitmaker Conrad Sewell, who was unmasked as the person in the Bouncer costume.
