The ‘epic’ reasons why this little red restaurant has been dubbed Sydney’s ‘best takeaway joint’: Retro Indian and spiced chip butties until 2am

Foodies are flocking to a charming takeaway in Sydney’s Inner West to experience its ‘banging’ curries, chip butties and BYO with no corkage fee.

Sitting along the busy Parramatta Road in Camperdown, Derrel’s is a lively late-night hangout, serving a tasty menu of Anglo-Indian dishes.

Chef Brendan King named the eatery after his Indian grandfather, who he remembers cooking meals like pork vindaloo and tandoori chicken wings for his 28 grandchildren.

Growing up, Brendan only remembers his grandfather in the kitchen, which explains the “Nana Never Cooked” mural above the door on the eatery’s ruby-red facade.

Inside, the decor is as nostalgic as the menu, with retro tiles, old-fashioned furniture and a bright pink counter exuding a quaint kitschy charm.

Printed on the back of 1980s Women’s Weekly covers, the menus feature dishes for spice lovers or those who can’t stand the heat, including Indian-style share plates, burgers and kebabs and King’s grandfather’s beloved recipes.

Fan favorites include the chip ‘putty’ with chapati bread and butter chicken gravy, as well as Bombay burgers, Hara Bhara kebab and Samosa chaat.

There are also butter chicken, pork vindaloo, vegetarian curry and tandoori chicken share plates with your choice of rice, roti, lime, onion and chutneys.

Drinks are BYO, but Indian soft drinks and a mango lassi are offered for thirsty guests.

Derrel’s is linked to the neighboring Lady Hampshire pub and is the place for those looking to unwind after a session in the beer garden or seeing a local band play on the venue’s stage.

Another said it reminds them of old Indian dinners they used to visit in London.

“The nostalgic ’90s British football decor, along with the ‘Bend it Like Beckham’ loop on an old flat screen, kept me entertained,” one customer wrote.

“Derrel’s Anglo-Indian restaurant in Camperdown is a new favorite restaurant of mine, serving Indian classics with a Derrel’s twist,” one person added.

‘The small, well-thought-out details in the atmosphere and furnishings create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. It is one of those food spots that you really have to experience for yourself.’
