Danny Welbeck had to be taken off the field at St James Park after a suspected serious injury.

The Brighton forward fell to the ground in the 77th minute after colliding with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

The clash between the pair seemed miniscule, but the 33-year-old immediately fell to the ground in pain and medical staff were immediately called onto the pitch.

Welbeck was treated for several minutes on the field, where he required oxygen before being taken off on a stretcher.

Several reports say the Brighton star has suffered a lower back injury, but the severity of his injury is unknown.

The England international received a standing ovation from both sets of fans as he was stretchered off the pitch and replaced by Jan Paul van Hecke.

Until the freak injury and before his appearance at St James Park was cut short, Welbeck was playing a brilliant game.

He scored the game opener in the 35th minute, after chesting Lewis Dunk’s long free-kick, forcing a one-two with Georginio Rutter, before managing to slot the ball into the back of the net, despite pressure from Tino Livramento.

Welbeck’s cool finish proved the match winner in what proved to be a frustrating afternoon for Eddie Howe’s men, who suffered their first defeat at home since January.
