Danny Rohl: Sheffield Wednesday appoint German coach, 34, who becomes youngest manager in EFL

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed German manager Danny Rohl as their new manager, with the 34-year-old becoming the EFL’s youngest manager.

The Championship club, promoted last season, sacked Xisco Munoz last week after he failed to win any of his 10 league matches in charge.

Rohl took on his first managerial role after working as an assistant at RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and with the German national team.

Sheffield Wednesday are bottom of the Championship with three points from 11 games. U21 boss Neil Thompson took charge of last Saturday’s 0-0 home draw against Huddersfield.

Rohl becomes the EFL’s youngest manager, being seven months younger than Bradford City goalkeeper Kevin McDonald, and Wednesday’s 11th permanent boss in the last 12 years.

The German became a coach at RB Leipzig after his lower league playing career was plagued by injuries. He eventually joined the first team under Ralph Hasenhuttl, then followed him to Southampton.

Rohl left in 2019 for Bayern Munich where he worked under Hansi Flick and then Niko Kovac before joining Flick with the German national team.

Flick was sacked in September after a 4-1 defeat to Japan and Rohl was also dismissed.

On Wednesday, manager Darren Moore left the club this summer following their promotion to the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has said he will not invest any more money in the club after accusing some fans of “crossing the line”.

Supporters protested against owner Dejphon Chansiri last month by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch against Middlesbrough.

Chansiri later released a statement saying he would no longer invest money in the club and was unhappy with the treatment of him and his family by some fans.
