Danny Murphy says Manchester United will ‘struggle’ to make it into the top four as he laments ‘shortage of goals’ after 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace

Former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder Danny Murphy believes Manchester United will struggle to reach the top four this season.

United hit the bar twice within seconds but shared the points in a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Erik ten Hag opted to start Marcus Rashford on the bench, and it was his replacement Alejandro Garnacho who hit the woodwork first just after the break in the first half.

Bruno Fernandes was also stopped by the crossbar, while Palace stayed in the game thanks to a superb performance from goalkeeper Dean Henderson with a number of fine saves against his old club.

‘I think they’ve brought in some good players for defence who can help them with that.

“But they haven’t addressed the goal deficit. Last season they scored the least in the top half. Ahead of Manchester United.

‘They brought in Zirkzee, the only attacking player. He’s a young boy, he’s not really a goalscorer and he’s not really a striker.

‘Here are United’s top scorers from last season. They’re not where Manchester United want to be in terms of title contention, even the top four will struggle I think. They create chances, they have creativity in the team.

United dropped further points on Saturday night when they drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace

‘They expect more from Hojlund, he came back today. But I think Ivan Toney was the one.

Gary Lineker agreed, saying the former Brentford striker was the obvious choice.
