Danny Dyer is punched in the face before strangling his co-star Ned Dennehy in bloody fight scenes while filming the second series of Mr Bigstuff

Danny Dyer is punched in the face before strangling his co-star in bloody first footage during filming for the second series of Mr Bigstuff.

The EastEnders actor, 47, enjoyed huge success with the first series of dark comedy Sky Max, in which he played Lee, an alpha male with a drug addiction.

And a very bloodied Danny was spotted last week filming new violent scenes for the upcoming second series on Canvey Island, Essex.

The star was seen with a huge gash on his head as he dripped blood in fight scenes at what appeared to be a fairground.

Hilarious pictures showed Danny’s face completely contorted after he took a massive punch from co-star Ned Dennehy – who plays Bunny.

In another scene, Danny wielded a giant yellow hammer – used for a whacking game – with a thin strap attached to it.

Danny was seen using the hammer’s strap in an attempt to strangle Ned, before swinging the weapon over his head.

Also spotted on set was creator, writer and star Ryan Sampson, who plays Glen, Lee’s estranged brother.

The first series of Mr Big Stuff’s success saw it become Sky Max’s highest-rated new original comedy in three years, reportedly leaving bosses wanting more.

A TV insider told The Sun at the time of its release: ‘Danny seems to have found his niche playing a rough-and-tumble guy in a straight-up comedy show.

‘He always said when he quit the BBC One soap that he felt there was a defining role that had eluded him until now.

‘Maybe he’s finally found that part of Mr Bigstuff. Sky’s executives certainly seem very impressed.’

Danny plays the estranged, wayward brother Lee, who tries to resolve the rivalry between his siblings.

The storyline is described as a ‘tale of two estranged brothers; Glen (Ryan Sampson), a nervous perfectionist who strives to live up to the suburban ideal, and Lee (Dyer), an alpha male with a drug addiction and a cookie jar full of his father’s ashes.

Glen and his fiancée share a perfect yet mundane life, despite him suffering from crippling erectile dysfunction and Kirsty having a secret habit of shoplifting, but they are happy.

This soon comes to an end when Lee enters their lives while on the run from his past, and their perfect lives begin to fall apart.

The star said: ‘I thought, ‘Oh wow, this is completely different from Mick’s character, and something people have never seen me do before.’

‘This is a pleasure. Being on a set where everyone is laughing is a different kind of energy.

“I’d like to take it one step further, this comedy thing, if I get the chance.”

The first series ended on a cliffhanger and Ryan said of the sequel: ‘Filthy secrets, dirty lies. Someone will have to tell the truth.’

The next season will launch on Sky and NOW in 2025.

Danny recently claimed that his nine-year stint on EastEnders led to him being ‘kicked off every casting sheet’.

He played Mick Carter from 2013 to 2022, leaving after drowning off-screen, trying to save his wife Linda Carter (Kellie Bright).

The star explained to Capital Breakfast with Jordan North, Chris Stark and Kemi Rodgers in July why Mr Big Stuff is the first of its kind.

Chris asked Danny, “Am I right in thinking this is your comedy debut, Danny?”

Danny replied, “Yeah, I mean, Plebs was funny, I put a little bit in there, but yeah. I’ve never had the responsibility of starring in comedy stuff, I was in EastEnders for a long time and EastEnders isn’t known for being funny.

‘It’s quite dark… I think you’re assigned the funny character, I didn’t know what I meant? I was desperate for a different kind of discipline.

Chris insisted: “But you must have been offered those kinds of comedic roles so many times before, what about this role made you go for it?”

Danny replied: ‘Well not really, I was on EastEnders for 10 years, I was out of the game, I was dropped from every casting list, I didn’t exist in the industry anymore.

‘That’s how it works, it’s great work, EastEnders, it brings you stability, but at the same time you can’t go and do other things, that’s just not going to happen.’
