Danny DeVito, 78, admits he never bothered that he never reached leading man status: ‘I don’t celebrate not being Clark Gable’

Danny DeVito opens up about his iconic career and admits he was never upset that he never became a traditional “protagonist” in Hollywood.

The 78-year-old actor made his feature film debut in 1975’s Best Picture winner, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and while he’s had a long and successful career spanning nearly five decades, he hasn’t had too many leading roles in that one. time.

The actor promoted his role in Disney’s The Haunted Mansion — which debuted this weekend in third place at the box office — in an interview with Parade, where he revealed that he’s perfectly happy where he is.

DeVito was Brad Pitt’s neighbor when he was married to Jennifer Aniston, and was asked if he was “glad” that he never became a big movie star like Pitt.

“I’m not celebrating that I’m not Clark Gable. I celebrate being who I am,” DeVito said.

He was also asked if he ever aspired to become a ‘full-time leading man’ like Pitt, adding that Brad is one of his favourites.

“I’m a big fan of Brad and Humphrey Bogart and (Jack) Nicholson and Leonardo. The painter, not the actor. Just kidding!’ joked DeVito.

“You know, we all have a place. I imagined my place would be closer to Peter Lorre or Edward G. Robinson or even WC Fields,” DeVito admitted.

When asked what it was like living next door to Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, the actor had nothing but great things to say about them.

“They had a very private beautiful house and they were great neighbors. And they had a giant hedge and a gate,” DeVito began.

“Brad, God bless him, was very protective of his family. I’d go to work or come out of the driveway, and I’d see one of the tour buses,” he continued.

“People would line up in front of this hedge to get their picture taken. All you could see was the hedge! But it’s Brad and Jennifer’s hedge, and that’s a meaningful thing. Maybe they took a leaf and put it in a book as a souvenir,” he joked.

He was also asked if it was a “thrill” to star in a big-budget big studio movie like Disney’s The Haunted Mansion at this stage of his career.

‘It is. You know, I’ve always wanted to work with Rosario, and I love Tiffany and Owen and LaKeith. And I love the grandeur of it. I did Jumanji a few years ago and that was big too. So was Dumbo (2019), ”he said.

‘Behind the scenes I’m a fan of all the new technology and all the different toys. So I mostly stuck around in the lighting and grip and camera departments,” DeVito continued.

This was not a small team. There were a lot of people making the movie and getting jobs. That’s very good,” he admitted.

He also admitted that it was “so cool” that his Batman Returns co-star Michael Keaton was returning as Batman in The Flash, saying he would come back as The Penguin if asked.

‘Oh yeah! I talk to (director) Tim Burton about it all the time. I think Oswald is one of the most operatic and best roles I’ve ever gotten. He is a tragic bird that could not fly. Come on! Give me a break! Every actor wants to be able to do that. And if there was ever a chance to do it again, I would,” he admitted.
