Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle announced on Thursday that he will be directing a hip-hop version of The Matrix for the inaugural show at a new £186 million art venue called Factory International in Manchester.

“You know how it is, especially at this moment you think: what the hell is going on?” the Scottish 65-year-old described at Thursday’s press conference.

“This is a project where we’re trying to address that… through dance, actually. That doesn’t reveal too much, but it does betray something of its ambition.’

Free Your Mind reunited Danny with choreographer Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy and producer-composer Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante MBE, with whom he collaborated during the Emmy-winning 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

The Pistol director raved about the ‘extraordinary’ Factory International – which will open next June – and compared it to the Turbine Hole at London’s Tate Modern.

Danny sprung: “But this is even better because it’s three play areas and wherever you look, you have to get involved and make it your own, really.”

Boyle also enlisted his longtime collaborator Tracey Seaward to produce Free Your Mind, as well as playwright Sabrina Mahfouz and artist Es Devlin.
