Rumours swirl in the Danish palace as it emerges ‘someone stayed home’ from Mary and Frederik’s planned Easter holiday

A royal flag raised over King Frederick and Queen Mary’s country home in Amalienborg has reignited rumors of an “unhappy family life” or drama in the household, royal watchers claim.

Denmark’s king and queen were due to be on a family holiday with their four children over the Easter holidays, but the flag suggests someone has stayed behind.

The royal flag only flies when the king, queen or crown prince is at home, leading royal watchers to suspect the family holiday did not go as planned.

Many assumed that Prince Christian stayed behind, perhaps by choice.

“All families experience that when the children reach a certain age, they do not always want to be with their parents,” writes one resident.

“It might have been an idea to read the rules that our king and crown prince are allowed to travel on the same plane for security reasons, which they have never been allowed to do,” said another.

Others joked that the king simply went on holiday without his wife.

These jokes refer to rumors that he had an affair with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova after the pair were photographed on a night out in Madrid in October.

“The king was probably traveling to Spain, his new favorite holiday destination,” one man laughed.

Another agreed, joking that he would be found in Madrid before he got very serious: ‘Honesty creates trust, while secrets create gossip and mistrust. What is done can never be undone, no matter how persistently one tries and how hard another tries.”

Others defended their king.

‘You need not assume that the king would travel there before the rest of the family would be ‘happy to come.’ Unless you know the king personally and he has told you, there is no need to spread bad rumors about him. This is true whether you like the guy or not,” one snapped.

These speculations come after the palace confirmed that the popular royal couple and their four children would be on holiday abroad and that Queen Margrethe would be back in charge.

The palace has not yet commented on the flag.

Queen Margrethe’s regent flag also flew, leading many to speculate that it was either Queen Mary or her son Prince Christian at home – as there would be no need for the regent to take charge if King Frederick was present.

Rumors of a fractured family life were put to bed when King Frederick and Queen Mary took the throne, but had dominated the news cycle after then-Prince was spotted in October on a night out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova.

Pictures of the couple enjoying a night out in Madrid angered Mary’s fans – many of whom claimed she ‘deserved a lot more’ from her prince.

They also smashed the appearance of the couple’s “fairytale” romance, which began in Sydney, where the Australian-born queen met the then prince at a bar.

The palace declined to comment, while Genoveva herself dismissed the rumors – although royal watchers claim the current king and queen have seemed ‘distant’ since then.

The family’s Easter holiday plans came as no surprise to fans.

King Frederik has often claimed that taking vacations is an important part of his job as a royal official.

He added that as king and queen, he and Mary will be even busier than usual, making regular breaks even more important.
