BREAKING NEWS: Daniel Ricciardo FINALLY confirms his future in Formula 1 as the Australian agrees to a sensational return to Red Bull – where he will be their reserve driver next season
After months of uncertainty, Daniel Ricciardo has finally settled his future with the Australian at Red Bull as their reserve driver.
Ricciardo’s future has been clouded by uncertainty since McLaren terminated the 33-year-old’s contract earlier this year, with the team unimpressed by a string of disappointing drives this season.
The Australian is tight-lipped about his future, but with places on the 2023 grid shrinking, Ricciardo accepted that he may have to take a back seat for 2023.
Sportsmail reported that he was in negotiations with Mercedes for a reserve driver role, with the team considering the Australian a potential successor to Lewis Hamilton.
However, those talks informed Red Bull and Christian Horner entered the race to re-sign the 33-year-old, who had his big break in F1 with the team before moving to Renault.
And on Friday, Red Bull chief Helmur Marko confirmed to Sky Sports that Ricciardo will be their third driver for 2023, backing up reigning world champion Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
Curiously, Perez’s deal with Red Bull expires in 2024, so a strong year with the team could pave the way for Ricciardo to regain his old seat.
