“Everyone hated me,” Daniel joked about the public reaction to his casting.

The Chester native said goodbye to the role in No Time To Die in 2021, with Henry Cavill, Regé Jean-Page and Tom Hardy among the top favorites to play as the next 007.

Daniel was recently made a Knight of the Order of St Michael and St George on Tuesday – the same honor his iconic big-screen character James Bond has been given.

The film star received the Princess Royal award at the inauguration at Windsor Castle in recognition of his outstanding contribution to film and theatre.

The royal family’s official Twitter account shared a photo of Daniel taking his honors alongside the famous Bond film line: ‘We’ve been Expected you.’

Daniel starred in the most recent five 2006 Bond films before ending his reign in the 2021 film No Time To Die.

While in character as 007, he made a famous appearance alongside the Queen in a sketch to mark the opening of the 2012 London Olympics.

Daniel was also seen in Knives Out (2019) alongside Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Jamie Lee Curtis, and will return in the film’s sequel, which premieres late next month.

The Order of St. Michael and St. George is the same gong bestowed on the famous spy in Ian Fleming’s novels.

In the book From Russia With Love, a spy chief states that 007 “was awarded the CMG in 1953, an award usually only given upon retirement from the Secret Service.”

Daniel receives an award for his services to film and theater, with the title usually reserved for senior diplomats.

The Order of St Michael and St George was founded in 1818 by the Prince Regent (later George IV) after the Napoleonic Wars to recognize service by citizens in Malta and the Ionian Islands.

It was later amended to include all British citizens living or serving abroad and to allow greater recognition of foreign affairs services. This is still the core of the Order.

Before the release of his final Bond film last year, Daniel was made an honorary commander by the Royal Navy, another rank his character held.
