Daniel Bruhl to play late fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld in Disney+ series Kaiser Karl

Daniel Bruhl will play the latest fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld in a new biographical series for Disney+.

The 44-year-old Spanish-German actor -full name Daniel César Martín Brühl González Domingo- will play the iconic German fashion designer in a six-episode series called Kaiser Karl according to the hollywood reporter Thursday.

Bruhl, who starred in the Oscar nominee All Quiet On The Western Front, will play a young Lagerfeld in the series that will follow his rise in the French fashion world in the early 1970s.

The series will be adapted from Raphaëlle Bacqué’s 2020 biography Kaiser Karl: The Life of Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld won’t be the only iconic fashion designer portrayed in the series, as his fashion rivals Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé will be played by Arnaud Valois and Alex Lutz, respectively.

French actress Agnès Jaoui will play Gaby Aghion, who was the founder of Chloé and one of the first to recognize Lagerfeld’s talent.

Actor Théodore Pellerin, There’s Someone Inside Your House, will play Lagerfeld’s love interest, Jacques de Bascher.

Jérôme Salle and Audrey Estrougo are set to direct the series produced by Gaumont and Jour Premier.

Biographer Bacqué adapted the book for the screen alongside Isaure Pisani-Ferry and Jennifer Have.

Lagerfeld died at the age of 85 after his battle with pancreatic cancer in March 2019.

Nicknamed ‘Kaiser Karl’ and ‘Fashion Meister’, Lagerfeld was worshiped as a god in fashion circles around the world until his death.

Born in Hamburg to a German mother and a Swedish father, he left his home country for France and the fashion capital Paris at age 20 and is best known for his association with Chanel, dating back to 1983.

But Lagerfeld, who was simultaneously producing collections for LVMH’s Fendi and its namesake label, an unprecedented feat in fashion, was also a brand in its own right, largely thanks to its unique style.

In his later years, he sported dark suits, white hair in a ponytail, and dark glasses, making him instantly recognizable, even outside the couture court.

However, her appearance and her favorite accessory changed over the years: for a long time, she carried a fan with her everywhere.

Known for loving Diet Coke, Lagerfeld said he lost weight in the early 2000s to suit the razor-thin suits brought to him by then-Christian Dior menswear designer Hedi Slimane.

In the rare moments when he wasn’t working, Lagerfeld would retreat to one of his many homes in Paris, Germany, Italy or Monaco, all of them lavish carbon copies of 18th-century interiors.

While reluctant to discuss his love life, Lagerfeld opened up about his partner of 18 years, the late Frenchman Jacques de Bascher, in a 2017 book.

Speaking to author Marie Ottavi for her book on De Bascher, who died of AIDS at 38, Lagerfeld revealed that during his partner’s last days he slept on a cot next to their hospital bed.

De Bascher was well known in Paris high society, particularly for his libertine parties, but although the couple were together for nearly two decades, until his death in 1989, Lagerfeld said they never had sex.

In 2010, Lagerfeld said that he did not sleep with the people he loved, preferring to pay prostitutes for sex.

Speaking to Vice magazine, he said: “Personally, I only like high-class escorts.” I don’t like sleeping with the people I really love. I don’t want to sleep with them because sex can’t last, but love can last forever. I think this is healthy.

‘And by the way the rich live, this is possible. But the other world, I think they need porn.

Daniel’s All Quiet On the Western Front, in which he plays the title role and served as executive producer, is nominated for nine Oscars on Sunday, as the German film is considered the overwhelming favorite to win the prize for Best International Film.
