Dancing On Ice’s Claire Sweeney suffers huge blow as she dislocates her shoulder and hurts her ribs while training leading to dramatic last-minute changes in her routine

Claire Sweeney’s Dancing On Ice performance was left hanging in the balance this week after she suffered a massive injury during training.

The actress, 52, collapsed to the ground while practicing hair-raising spins with her professional skating partner Colin Grafton, 32, injuring her ribs and dislocating her shoulder.

Coronation Street star Claire was due to sing Big Spender during her burlesque performance this week, but her routine had to be dramatically changed to take her injuries into account.

A source told MailOnline: ‘Last week the feedback from the judges was that they wanted to see more speed and daring, which Claire took to heart.

“This week she really wanted to push herself, but she pushed herself a little too much and dislocated her shoulder and hurt her ribs.

‘She performed the move twice and was perfect – suddenly she hit the ice. It blinded her completely.

‘Medication has pushed her shoulder back in and she is between rehearsals taking painkillers as advised.

‘She is still in a lot of pain and they have had to change the routine to protect her shoulder. The routine change is completely last minute, so she has to learn new moves and of course her confidence has been affected by the injury.

‘But she is a true professional and doesn’t want to let anyone down, especially as she has become such a fan favourite.

“So many people have withdrawn before with similar injuries, so everyone is rallying behind her and has nothing but respect for Claire’s determination.”

MailOnline has contacted ITV and a representative for Claire for comment. Colin’s agent could not be reached for comment.

This isn’t the first time Claire has gotten into trouble while rehearsing this series.

Ahead of her debut appearance on the show last month, it was unclear whether she would take to the ice after injuring her knees.

An insider said The sun at the time: ‘Claire trained very hard, but managed to injure herself.

A source close to the show added: ‘Claire is in good hands. ITV has medical support on site and health and safety across the board. The stars know the risks of participating in the show, but they are well taken care of the entire time. Everyone wishes Claire a speedy recovery.’

Meanwhile, Claire was left red-faced as she prepared to perform for the first time during this year’s series.

The star took to the ice with Colin last month, as the pair skated to Bonnie Tyler’s song Holding Out For A Hero.

But during rehearsals she got into trouble when she fell and hit the floor.

Although she was not injured as a result of her fall, she did not escape completely unscathed: her leggings tore leaving her exposed.

After her fall, Claire was seen practicing with judge Christopher Dean as she turned around with her hands on his shoulders, while fellow panelist Jayne Torvill watched her technique.

However, unbeknownst to Claire, her blue leggings were torn after her accident, exposing her backside.

Claire discussed the incident in an on-camera piece, saying: ‘I’ve been skating around with Torvill and Dean and no one has told me!’

Dancing On Ice continues on Sunday February 4 at 6.20pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
