Dance Moms star Kelly Hyland, 53, reveals she has been diagnosed with ‘fast-moving’ breast cancer – months after a ‘clean mammogram’ – as she shares ‘red flag’ symptom that alerted her to the illness
Dance Moms star Kelly Hyland, 53, has revealed she has been diagnosed with ‘rapidly progressing’ breast cancer – just months after having a ‘clean mammogram’.
Kelly, who appeared on Dance Moms with her daughters Brooke and Paige from 2011 to 2014, shared the heartbreaking news with E! News this morning.
She explained that she first started to suspect something was wrong after she suddenly lost a significant amount of weight despite not making any changes to her daily life.
“The first red flag was my significant weight loss,” she told the publication.
“I lost enough that others noticed and asked for my diet tips, but there was nothing I had changed in my daily life that could have caused the loss.”

In late March, she said she noticed a lump in her breast and decided to have it checked out, despite having had a mammogram just eight months earlier.
“I just had one done eight months earlier and the results came back clean,” she continued.
“However, this new mammogram and ultrasound did not do that. It came back and showed a mass.”
She then had a biopsy and the doctors told her she had grade three invasive carcinoma.
“I went from a clean result to a malignant mass in eight months,” the reality star said.
“I was shocked that it had grown so quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was going to face.”
She is currently undergoing the second of six initial chemotherapy treatments. After those are done, she will have to undergo surgery, radiation and 11 more rounds of chemo.
Kelly recalled breaking the heartbreaking news to her children, daughters Brooke, 26, and Paige, 23, and son Josh, 24, whom she shares with ex-husband Randy Hyland.
She explained that she first started to suspect something was wrong after she suddenly lost a significant amount of weight despite not making any changes to her daily life.
She told them over a “four-way call” because they were in Pittsburg at the time while she was in Florida.
“As soon as she told us the bad news, I felt like I was in shock and was quickly hit by a whirlwind of emotions,” Paige said.
“Not only was I scared, I was angry, sad and confused as to why this would happen to someone as wonderful as my mother.”
Brooke, who pointed out that they had previously lost their grandmother to cancer, added that she “hated” knowing she had to “watch another important person in her life go through this.”
Josh said they are trying to remain “hopeful,” explaining, “I feel like she caught on quickly. I know my mother is strong enough to get through this.”
Brooke agreed: “She is the strongest woman I know and I have faith that she will come out of this and I will be there every step of the way. She has so much love and support in her corner.”
“As much as I wish I could take her pain away and heal her from this terrible situation, the only thing I could do [have] The power to do that is to be there for her, just like she has been there for me my whole life,” Paige said.
“This is going to be a long and challenging year, but if anyone can beat cancer, I’m confident it’s my mother.”
Kelly told the outlet that “all of her former Dance Mom costars are aware” of her diagnosis and have been “extremely supportive.”
She has no plans to put her podcasts Back to the Barre or Dear Dance Mom… on hold, the latter of which she co-hosts with fellow Dance Mom alumni Melissa Gisoni, Holly Frazier and Jill Vertes.
The star is busy helping her daughter Brooke plan her wedding, and she’s not letting her diagnosis get in her way.
Brooke got engaged to account manager Brian Thalman earlier this month.
“Planning the wedding will be a major distraction – I plan to help with every detail to ensure it is her dream wedding,” Kelly said.
“I may not look or feel my best, but nothing is going to stop me from helping and seeing my little girl walk down the aisle.”
