Dance Moms fans outraged by ‘disturbing’ JonBenet Ramsey-inspired routine after victim was sensationalized by gruesome murder

A dance routine on the series Dance Moms: A New Era has stirred controversy due to a dance number based on deceased murder victim JonBenét Ramsey.

The routine, performed by dancer Ashlan Scheide, 11, included a shocking scene in which the young dancer pretended to be strangled.

Many people were outraged by a routine based on Ramsey, who was found dead in her Boulder, Colorado, home in 1996 at the age of six.

The case, which received national attention, never led to any arrests and the child’s murder was never solved.

In a scene on the show, Ashlan’s mother, Lisa, told her, “You’re going to be a glamour girl, which was JonBenét, but then she was kidnapped and murdered.

Ashlan said she was shocked by the information surrounding the Ramsey case, but was willing to follow instructions to win the competition.

“This is really not my thing, but I’ll do anything to win,” Ashlan said.

The episode features Ashlan going over the dance routine with her dance teacher Gloria Hampton.

Many viewers were outraged by what they saw in the series, which is available on Hulu.

“I was like, ‘I’m sorry,’ I was like, ‘That’s ridiculous,’” Evie Nagy, a viewer of the show, told Inside Edition on Thursday.

Hampton said Within edition about her background and creative process in a recent interview.

“I’ve been doing this for years,” Hampton told the outlet. “Last season we took 450 dances to a dance competition for five weeks and then to nationals. So I’m used to making costumes for thousands of kids and 450 dances.

She added: ‘Music, I’m really inspired by music. I think it leads me to what I want to do. I hear something and I’m inspired by it and I have a vision. It’s interesting. I really have a vision in my head when I hear something that I like.’
