Dana White FINALLY reveals Conor McGregor comeback, with Notorious set to return to action after three years out in huge fight later this year

  • Dana White revealed Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the Octagon
  • The Irishman has been out of action since his clash with Dustin Poirier in 2021

Dana White closed out the historic UFC 300 event with the official announcement of Conor McGregor’s clash with Michael Chandler.

The pair have been facing each other in the Octagon for months and even coached against each other on the TV show The Ultimate Fighter.

Speculation has gone back and forth in recent months, with McGregor recently revealing that he has received confirmation that the fight will go ahead.

With all parties finally on the same page, the UFC president has officially announced that the pair will finally compete against each other on pay-per-view on June 29.

The clash will be contested at 170 pounds and will be a five-round main event.

When asked why the fight had been in the pipeline for so long, the UFC president revealed that McGregor has only recently been able to train for his return to the Octagon.

β€œIt’s not like we’ve been working on it for years,” White said at the UFC 300 post-fight press conference. ‘There’s a lot going on behind the scenes.

‘It’s all about timing. Chandler has been ready, but Conor isn’t ready yet. We talked about this recently at one of the press conferences, he had a lot of commitments that he had to deal with.

“What you don’t want him to do is accept a fight if he has a lot of commitments and he can’t train 100% for a fight.”

The date remains the same as McGregor teased in a social media post on New Year’s Eve.

Although at the time the Irishman claimed the fight would instead take place at middleweight, a division that neither he nor Chandler had previously competed in.

After becoming a two-weight world champion in Cage Warriors, McGregor signed with the UFC in 2013 and began a dominant run in the featherweight division, reeling off five straight victories before defeating Chad Mendes to claim the interim featherweight title.

McGregor’s last fight at 145 pounds saw him stunningly dethrone long-reigning champion Jose Aldo after just 13 seconds to unify the belts.

Since then, the Irishman has fought at both 155 and 170 pounds, defeating Eddie Alvarez in the former to become the first-ever dual-weight UFC world champion.

Traditionally held in July, International Fight Week has been a fixture on the UFC calendar since 2011, with the first edition of the event headlined by UFC 148, where Chael Sonnen rematched Anderson Silva for the middleweight title.

Last year’s Las Vegas event included a Hall of Fame ceremony, a two-day fan experience and a UFC 290 card headlined by featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski’s clash with Yair Rodriguez.
