A vile child molester who told police he was “just trying to be a good guy” is up for parole in months.

Damien John O’Brien, 36, pleaded guilty to numerous counts of child sexual abuse and the rape of a 13-year-old girl in the Sunshine Coast’s Maroochydore District Court on Wednesday.

O’Brien approached the girl in an empty stairwell and lured her into his car before attacking her as she desperately texted friends for help.

The former IT worker had already spent 355 days in custody before Judge Glen Cash sentenced him to four years in prison.

Despite pleading guilty to rape, one count of possession of child exploitation material and two counts of indecent treatment of children under the age of 16, O’Brien will be eligible for parole in October.

The court heard O’Brien approach his victim at the Big Top Shopping Center in Maroochydore before taking her to Noosa and assaulting her, the Courier Mail reported.

She noticed the defendant sitting in his car and looking in her direction, he eventually came over and joined her on the stairs. He talked to her, but she initially ignored him because she felt unsafe,” Attorney General Rebecca Marks said in court.

‘[O’Brien] spoke to her about his sexual history and she was concerned and messaged her boyfriend.

“At 8.45pm she ended up in his car, although it’s unclear why, he drove her towards Noosa and she noticed he had locked the door.”

The girl had been texting friends at some point during her ordeal, when O’Brien took off her undergarments and touched her indecently.

Her friends then contacted the police who intercepted O’Brien in his car.

‘[I’m] just a good guy trying to be a good guy,” O’Brien told police at the time.

He was out on bail for possessing child exploitation material at the time, defense attorney Lachlan Ygoa-McKeown told the court.

O’Brien has been incarcerated since June 24, 2022.
