Mayor gives Damar Hamlin’s doctors in Cincinnati a key to the city ‘for his vital care’ of Bills safety after his cardiac arrest on the field

The Cincinnati health care providers who treated Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin following his cardiac arrest on the field on Jan. 2 have been given a key to the city by Mayor Aftab Pureval.

“What an honor it was to stand alongside these @uchealth heroes this morning,” a tweet from Pureval’s account read. “We gave them a key to the city for their vital care of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Thank you for representing Cincinnati and providing this type of advanced care to all patients who need it.’

Hamlin collapsed during a Monday Night Football game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the visiting Bills and was successfully revived on the field by Buffalo coaching staff before being rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Bills safety Damar Hamlin has been released from the hospital in Cincinnati and is in Buffalo

The Cincinnati health care providers who treated Bills safety Damar Hamlin following his cardiac arrest on the field on Jan. 2 have been given a key to the city by Mayor Aftab Pureval.

The precise cause of the 24-year-old’s cardiac arrest has not been revealed. Hamlin tackled Bengals receiver Tee Higgins moments before he fell to the grass at Paycor Stadium.

UC’s Dr. Timothy Pritts and Dr. William Knight oversaw his care at the center, which ended Jan. 9 when he was transferred to a hospital in western New York.

“Headed home to Buffalo today with so much love in my heart,” the safety tweeted at the time. “Seeing the world rally around me on Sunday was truly an incredible feeling. The same love that all of you have shown me is the same love that I plan to give back to the world and more. Bigger than soccer!

A tackle Hamlin (L) made on Tee Higgins (85) led to his cardiac arrest and hospitalization.

He has since been released and even appeared in Sunday’s rematch between the Bills and Bengals in Orchard Park, New York.

Hamlin was seen standing in a luxury suite atop Highmark Stadium and even made a “heart” sign with his hands in thanks for the prayers he received during his recovery.

The Bengals won the playoff game, ending the Bills’ season.

Hamlin is still facing a lengthy rehab three weeks after his cardiac arrest in Cincinnati, his family’s spokesman confirmed last week.

“Damar still needs oxygen and is having regular cardiac monitoring to make sure there are no setbacks or after effects,” Jordon Rooney, Hamlin’s friend and business associate, told The Associated Press Thursday night. “Although he is able to visit team facilities, Damar is not in a condition to travel frequently and requires extra rest to help his body heal.”
