Dallas Cowboys reach decision on Mike McCarthy’s future after days of talks following playoffs failure
After a disappointing season for the Dallas Cowboys, the organization and head coach Mike McCarthy are now expected to open talks on a new contract.
McCarthy’s current deal expires next Tuesday, and owner Jerry Jones has yet to commit to moving on after the team went 7-10 and missed the playoffs.
However, according to NFL Network’s Tom PelisseroThe parties are expected to open contract talks on Friday and “remain open” to cooperation.
This development comes after several days of reported discussions between McCarthy and the franchise, although no formal negotiations have yet taken place.
Pelissero noted that there are “other issues” that need to be resolved, and that most of McCarthy’s aides could take on the next job starting next Tuesday.
Dallas previously denied the Chicago Bears’ request to interview McCarthy for their vacant head coaching position.
The Cowboys are now expected to move forward with contract negotiations for Mike McCarthy
McCarthy was without his starting QB, Dak Prescott, for more than half the season
In addition to the Bears, the Saints, Jets, Patriots, Raiders and Jaguars are well underway in their head coaching searches as they look to turn around their respective franchises.
McCarthy has gone 49-35 in five seasons with Dallas and has never reached the NFC Championship game during that span.
However, he has also been without quarterback Dak Prescott for long stretches in two separate seasons, as the pass rusher played just eight games this year after suffering a season-ending hamstring injury.
McCarthy, who previously led the Packers to a Super Bowl victory, led the Cowboys to a 12-5 record last year (before his team was defeated 48-32 at home in the wild-card round by Green Bay).
Asked earlier this week to make his case as coach of the Cowboys, McCarthy called himself a “winner.”
“I don’t like to talk about myself that way, but I’ll be clear: I’m a winner,” he told reporters. ‘I know how to win. I won a championship. I won a championship in this building. And that’s who I am. We’ll see where it goes.’
According to the official team websiteHis 59 percent winning percentage with Dallas ranks fourth in team history among head coaches.
