Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones responded somewhat flippantly when asked about a second reckless driving charge faced by his team’s second-year defenseman Sam Williams.

Williams was arrested after being caught speeding and possessing marijuana – his second speeding ticket in as many years.

“First of all, I’m saying he is — which more often than not is the case, this sounds a little hollow — but he does and is growing up,” Jones told reporters after the news broke yesterday.

Subsequently, Jones decided to further clarify his belief in Williams’ maturity by pointing out that this time he was not going as fast as he was last year.

“What was he going, 66 (mph)?” Jones asked. When a reporter tried to clarify what speeding incident the owner was referring to, Jones replied, “No this year. So this year he drives 54 km/h less than last year. 98 (mph) to 66, so it’s an improvement.”

Williams was arrested Sunday night in Frisco and charged with marijuana possession

Williams has played 15 games since finishing 56th overall in the 2022 Draft by Ole Miss

The Star Telegram reported that the Cowboys were aware of the incident, which occurred a day after he played in the 22–14 preseason loss to Seattle.

According to the Frisco Police Department, possession of marijuana is a low-level misdemeanor, while carrying a weapon unlawfully is simply a misdemeanor.

It doesn’t seem to have affected Williams’ preparation for the season. As of Tuesday, he was back with the Cowboys.

In January, a warrant was issued for Williams’ arrest for reckless driving following his accident in late December in the Dallas suburb of Plano.

No one was injured in the collision, although Williams and the 71-year-old driver of another vehicle were both taken to hospital as a precaution.

The 23-year-old Williams is a pass-rushing specialist who jumps in on the defensive end when the Cowboys pass.

The Mobile, Alabama native began his college career at Northeast Mississippi Community College in 2017 and 2018 before transferring to Ole Miss for his final three college seasons.

The linebacker/defensive end recorded 12.5 sacks for the Rebels in 2021 before being drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of that year’s NFL Draft.

Despite being critically acclaimed from Oxford, MS, background issues were a concern among NFL teams, but not for Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones.

Williams was charged with sexual assault in 2020, but the charges were eventually dropped months later.

“I’m confident we know the young man comes in here, we’ve surveyed the ground and we’ve got everything there,” Jones said after picking Williams on draft night in 2021.

“After seeing everything there, we summoned Sam, and I’m confident we’ve got everything.”
