Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is entering the final year of his contract with no serious discussions taking place between his representation and the team.
Prescott’s deal will cost the Cowboys $59.45 million in cap space through 2024 – with a base salary of $29 million and a $5 million bonus this year.
“I’m absolutely confident,” Prescott said Monday (via ESPN). ‘Obviously it helps the team.
‘It’s important for the numbers… That’s a process. Both parties understand that. Everything is great. It will happen.’
If Prescott’s past negotiations are to form the basis for how these talks proceed, it’s not a promising sign.
There have been no significant talks lately to keep Dak Prescott with the Dallas Cowboys
Owner Jerry Jones says he’s not concerned this could be the quarterback’s final season
Jones says the Cowboys are taking an “all-in” approach this offseason, which Prescott likes
It took almost two years for the two sides to reach the four-year, $160 million deal that Prescott signed in 2021.
As part of that deal, the Cowboys cannot franchise tag him until 2025 and he also has a no-trade clause.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said at the NFL Combine, “What we do or don’t do there (with Prescott’s contract), I can’t say right now, but the most important thing is he’s going to be our quarterback.”
Jones also said he doesn’t “fear” this could be Prescott’s last year in Dallas “because I’m confident of being better than last year.” And that would be the focus.”
The owner has called his team’s approach to the offseason ‘all-in’ after disappointment in the play-offs, something Prescott is looking forward to.
“Honestly, I’m excited to see it,” Prescott said. ‘Don’t know. I can’t say I’ve talked to him about what’s all-in and how he plans to take those steps, but yeah, let’s see and I’m excited about it.”
