Daily cinema screenings to 623 by 2022, theater attendance down: Delhi government

The average number of cinema screenings per day rose from 450 in 2010 to 623 in 2022, but the average number of cinemagoers per day has been declining over the past 13 years, according to the Delhi Statistical Handbook-2023.

The number of theaters in Delhi increased from 129 in 2008 to 137 in 2022, peaking in 2017 when the number reached 142.

The handbook containing data on socio-economic parameters of the national capital was released by the Economics and Statistics Department of the Delhi government.

The number of multiplexes has also increased from 21 in 2008 to 33 in 2022, the manual said.

The average number of cinema visitors per day in 2010 was 90,000, while theaters, including cinema complexes, showed an average of 450 shows per day.

While the average number of showings rose to 510, an average of 98,000 cinema visitors visited the cinemas per day in 2011. In 2012 and 2013, this number rose to 1,07,000 and 1,15,000 respectively, while the number of performances also increased sharply.

In 2014, the average number of performances rose to 665 and cinema attendance rose to 1,23,025.

There was a decline in 2017, when the number of average moviegoers per day dropped to 49,353. The low point came in 2020, when cinemas were closed from mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The average number of cinema visitors per day was 16,180.

In 2021, the Center received permission from the Center to operate cinema halls across the country at full capacity from February 1, while adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols.

However, during the deadly second wave of the pandemic in April, cinemas were completely closed. From November 1, they were allowed to reopen in Delhi with 100 percent occupancy.

In 2021 the number of performances was 614, while the average number of cinema visitors was 61,455 and in 2022 the number of performances was 623, while cinema attendance was 62,352.
