Dad goes viral after yelling ‘POOP’ to get his son to smile in photos

A father is praised by other parents after sharing his brilliant trick to make his son smile naturally in photos – and all it takes is to scream out the word ‘poop’.

Children’s book author Adam Perry, 37, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, nam Twitter on Sept. 14 to share two side-by-side photos of his kindergarten-age son posing for the camera on his first day of school.

“My son when I tell him to smile versus when I say ‘poop!’ scream,” he tweeted.

The author explained that he told him to ‘smile’ for the first picture and then yelled ‘poop’ for the second while emphasizing the difference between them.

Perry’s son looks cute in both shots, but his smile is a little strained in the first photo. In the second, he has a more natural, open-mouthed grin, and it’s all because his dad made him laugh.

The writer’s post has gone viral, garnering nearly 300,000 likes in a week. Fans took to the comments to applaud him for the technique, which a number of parents found helpful.

“You’ve mastered parenting,” one person wrote, while another joked, “Ha! You should be a school photographer.’

“My son has the funniest smile when he tries too hard,” the father told GMA. “I learned at some point that if I just yelled ‘POOO’ and took the shot quickly, it worked much better”

“So that’s the secret to getting a good shot,” added someone else.

Perry opened up about the viral post in an interview with Good morning Americasay they always take pictures on the first day of school.

However, on that particular day, they were in a rush and struggled to get a good shot.

“My son always has the funniest smile when he tries too hard,” he explained. “I learned at some point that if I just yelled “POOO” and took the shot quickly, it always went much better.

“In this case, it was a pretty dramatic comparison, so I thought I’d share,” he added.

Perry’s post has since gone viral on Reddit, Instagram and Facebook. He admitted that he “only expected five to 10 people to like it” – and then it took off.

“This post must have really touched people, and I’ve been getting tons of messages from people using this trick and getting great pictures of their kids, which to me is the best thing about it all,” he told GMA.
