Czech Republic’s Euro 2024 hopes have been dented after an injury to midfielder Michal Sadilek, who was forced to withdraw from the tournament after falling from a bicycle.
The 25-year-old plays football in the Netherlands for FC Twente and was at the last European Championship. Sadilek also captained his country in a 7-1 win over Malta on Friday.
A statement from the Czech Football Association confirmed on Sunday that the player would miss the tournament after ‘suffering a laceration to his leg’ following the fall.
Manager Ivan Hasek confirmed Sadilek said losing the star, who played 24 times for the national team, is a heavy blow.
“This is a big setback for us because Michal is one of our experienced players,” Hasek said. ‘It was not without reason that he wore the captain’s armband during the match against Malta.’
