Cynthia Nixon returns for series two of HBO’s The Gilded Age with her character Ada Brook set to ‘surprise everyone’ in new storyline
Cynthia Nixon has had a series of doomed on-screen love affairs. First there was her romance with Che in And Just Like That, in the Sex And The City franchise.
And now comes another unexpected twist: this time in the second series of Sky Atlantic drama The Gilded Age, written by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.
In the show, set in New York in the 1880s, the actress, 57, plays Ada, the downtrodden, “kind but not bright” younger sister of Agnes (played by Christine Baranski) – who married well and is worth a fortune is.
Decades after a lonely conversation, Ada surprises everyone by falling head over heels in love – but it is not said with whom.
Creator Julian said, “Well, you know, love is a pretty fundamental part of most of our lives.”

He continued, “The biggest mistakes we ever make, and the times we deceive ourselves the most, are usually related to love in some way.
“And I think it’s good to show your characters in love because then you can take them to areas they wouldn’t normally go if they were feeling sane and sane.
“We use love this season to show who Ada really is. We have seen one side of her, as Agnes’ dominated sister.
‘But there’s more to it than that. There’s an emotional dimension to her that I think we’ve glimpsed but never really seen. And we’ll see this season.’
He added ominously, “Of course, happiness in drama is usually a matter of a moment. Happily ever after is what comes when the drama is over.”
The torrid lives of America’s wealthiest dynasties will once again be dramatically exposed as they take center stage in season two of HBO’s hit series The Gilded Age.
The show, created by Julian Fellowes, charts the tug-of-war between old and new money in 1880s New York.
Those with generational wealth like Agnes van Rhijn (played by Christine Baranski) and Caroline Astor (played by Donna Murphy) are desperate to keep the railroad-rich interlopers, George and Bertha Russell, out of their cloistered circle.
Based on true events, season two of the series will hit a dramatic tenor as it retells the true story of dueling opera houses in a colorfully decked out display of money and manners.

At the height of the Gilded Age in New York City, nothing signified one’s good birth, wealth, and social rank more than a seat at the famed Academy of Music.
The 18 boxes were passed down from generation to generation and were closely guarded by the society’s oldest and most prominent families: the Astors, the Livingstons, the Schermerhorns and the Roosevelts.
Meanwhile, the nouveau riche – including the Vanderbilts, Carnegies and Rockefellers – were persona non grata.
When William Henry Vanderbilt, perhaps the richest man in the world at the time, attempted to purchase a box at the Academy for the generous sum of $30,000, he was quickly denied.
Frustrated with the exclusionary culture, the new money men banded together to build a new Metropolitan Opera House at Broadway and 39th Street that surpassed the old Academy in every respect.
Today, the Met remains a beloved institution in New York City’s performing arts scene at Lincoln Center. But without this little-known feud among American aristocrats, the famous music box would not exist.
The show will stream from October 29.
It comes after Cynthia revealed there is a ‘very slim chance’ that Kim Cattrall would return to And Just Like That, despite her cameo in the season two finale.
Fans who were excited about Kim’s cameo in And Just Like That… shouldn’t hold their breath expecting her to return for a bigger role in a possible third season.
Last month, it was reported that the actress would reprise her role as Samantha Jones with a cameo in the season 2 finale, after it was explained in the series premiere that Samantha had moved to London.
This comes years after Cattrall said in 2016 that she was done playing Samantha after failing to approve the script for a proposed third Sex and the City film.

When And Just Like That… came together, it happened without her co-stars or creator Michael Patrick King even approaching Cattrall about returning, but after HBO’s Casey Bloys approached her about returning, she ultimately said yes.
Although fans won’t see the cameo until the season 2 finale in August, Nixon revealed on Thursday’s episode of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live that fans likely won’t see Cattrall return in future seasons if HBO streaming service Max were to order them . .
Nixon was asked by a fan who wrote in WWHL, “Cynthia, with Kim making a small cameo this season, what do you think the chances are that she will appear in a larger role in the third season?”
‘I think very, very small. It was a cameo, I think it was a special treat for the 25th anniversary,” Nixon said.
