Fury when cyclists stop traffic while riding on the road right next to a bike lane, but some argue they were right

  • Reddit user shared photo of cyclists ignoring the bike lane
  • The image sparked a heated debate on Reddit.
  • Some said the poorly designed bike path was the problem

An irate driver has snapped a photo of a group of cyclists stopping traffic on the highway just inches from a completely empty designated bike lane.

The photo, showing Carrington Road in Marrickville in Sydney’s Inner West, was shared on Reddit on Sunday, where it sparked a debate with hundreds of comments.

“After watching these geniuses slowly walk across the street next to the bike lane while cars stopped behind them, I can see why people get upset,” the person wrote.

A Sydney road user shared this ‘infuriating’ image on Reddit showing cyclists riding alongside a bike lane. Although some claimed that the bike path was “not fit for purpose”

They added that the photo was taken from the passenger seat, and while they generally support bike lanes, the experience swayed their opinion.

Some commenters agreed that the behavior was infuriating.

“It’s always the ones who dress like they’re in the Tour de France who do this,” said one person.

They do it here too. The bike and pedestrian lane is empty 90 percent of the time. But some ALWAYS drive on the road, because ‘it’s softer’. It’s a 80 km/h highway,” said another.

‘They’re not going as fast as the traffic, why aren’t they on the bike lane? It’s just being inconsiderate,” added a third.

“It should be illegal not to use a bike lane when there is one,” said a fourth.

However, the vast majority of commenters defended cyclists and said that the problem was actually poorly designed bike lanes.

“This bike lane has stop signs at every intersection for cyclists instead of getting priority like it does on the main road,” one person said.

Those are road cyclists in training mode, they don’t need to use bike lanes as it’s unreasonable as you can’t go fast. They have every right to use the road,” said another.

It’s the worst bike lane in Sydney. It has four junctions where you have to yield in all directions and cannot see oncoming traffic. Switch between going to the sidewalk and the road. Then about 40 meters from where they are in this photo, it just stops and you have to ride your bike on a very busy road,” said a third.

“Yes, many of these bike lanes are not fit for purpose and much more dangerous than riding on the road,” added a fourth.
