Female cyclist is killed on Princes Highway as driver is taken to hospital for mandatory testing

A cyclist has died after being hit by a car on a busy highway.

Emergency services were called to the Princess Highway in Waterfall, in Sydney’s south, about 8am on Tuesday after reports a female cyclist had been hit by a car.

Paramedics attempted to treat the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

She has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be in her 70s.

The female driver of the car, 23, was taken to Sutherland Hospital to undergo mandatory tests.

“Officers from Sutherland Police Area Command have established a crime scene and are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash,” New South Wales Police said in a statement.

All southbound lanes of the Princes Highway were closed at Waterfall and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Light vehicles were diverted via McKell Avenue, while heavy vehicles were instructed to park.

Traffic controllers have now started to slowly guide trucks through the accident site.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.

There’s more to come.
